Understanding the Role of a Panel Physician

Panel physicians consist of doctors authorized to conduct the immigration medical exams required for people to immigrate to Canada. These include students, temporary workers, permanent residents, and some visitors.

All panel physicians must receive the Government of Canada’s approval and designation, and your personal family physician cannot perform valid IMEs.

Who Can Use a Panel Physician?

Temporary Visa Applicants

When applying for a Temporary Visa such as a student visa, visitor visa, or work permit, you can get an IME done before applying. However, if you do not complete an immigration medical exam, IRCC may send you directions on obtaining one, which must be completed within 30 days.

Permanent Residency Applicants

You may be asked to complete an immigration medical exam if you are applying for Permanent Residence, and IRCC sends instructions on obtaining your medical exam.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Additionally, refugees and asylum seekers may also be asked to complete a medical exam after making a refugee claim at a Canadian entry point.

Why Choose an IRCC Panel Physician in Toronto?

The designation of panel physicians involves an assessment of the individual’s qualifications and adherence to panel physician guidelines when conducting immigration medical exams. We ensure we maintain high standards of practice at Immigration Medical Toronto and guarantee each physician can complete exams that meet requirements.

Selecting a panel physician authorized by the IRCC ensures the physician adheres to the government’s protocols and strict guidelines. This adherence to protocol guarantees the accuracy and integrity of the exam process.

Immigration Medical Toronto panel physicians are IRCC certified and trusted to provide reliable, efficient immigration medical exams. With conveniently located clinics and the latest e-Medical technology, we ensure fast submission of your results directly to the IRCC, eliminating delays.

Our experienced team offers a seamless process, supporting you every step of the way with compassionate care and expertise so you can move forward in your immigration journey with confidence.

The Immigration Medical Exam Process

The IME is an essential part of applying for a Canadian temporary or permanent residency. During the exam, your immigration panel physician will conduct several tests, including physical exams and assessing your medical history. They focus on contagious diseases that can harm public health.

Preparing for Your Immigration Medical Exam

To prepare for your immigration medical exam, we advise the following:

  • Prepare Your Medical History and Medications: Please bring with you a history of previous surgeries, medical issues, or treatments.
  • Gather Required Documents:  Please gather and bring with you any required Immigration Canada paperwork (such as the IMM1017 form or Express Entry Invitation Letter). You must also bring with you a valid government-issued ID, such as:
    • Valid original passport—not an electronic photo or copy
    • National ID
    • Canadian driver’s license
    • Refugee protection claimant document
    • Refugee travel document
    • Acknowledgement of Claim and Notice to Return for Interview
    • Interim Federal Health Certificate
  • Hydrate: Remain hydrated for lab tests, including urine and blood tests.

Additionally, if you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, please bring those with you as well.

What Happens After the Medical Exam?

You must wait for further instructions once you complete the IME and submit the required documentation if you are required for your application type. Remain responsive to requests from Canadian immigration authorities or Immigration Medical Toronto for any pending or outstanding tests.

Results are directly submitted to Refugees and Citizenship Canada within 3-10 days. They are usually available 30 days from your exam date; however, if additional information is required, it may be longer. We will also provide you with an eMedical Information Sheet confirming that you completed the exam.
